The One Thing Every Organization Should Learn from the New England Patriots

For this blog post I decided to write about an article I found about the New England Patriots. Last February, Forbes published an article titled “The One Thing Every Organization Should Learn from the New England Patriots.” In the article, it discusses how over the past years the Patriots have had success winning games and championships because of resilience. Stanley McChrystal is quoted in the article saying, “In a resilience paradigm, managers accept the reality that they will inevitably confront unpredicted threats; rather than erecting strong, specialized defenses,” this is exactly what the Patriots have done. Unlike most teams who draft star players out of college the Patriots have built a system that allows them to place players in a position for success. Whether it be an offensive player playing defense or vice versa, a small school undrafted rookie free agent making a big interception, or a quarterback who hadn’t started a game since high school, the patriots have found ways to win games.

Taking this back to management, managers and executives need to be more like the Patriots and develop a system that can roll with the punches. The Patriots realize situations will arise over the course of a season that is why they don’t try to plan for the future but work week to week. Every game brings new challenges and being flexible allows them to find success. Using a hospital for example, managers don’t know when an outbreak is going to occur or when there is a mass causality. They need to take every situation differently and work with what they have to achieve the best outcomes.

  3. I liked your closing argument. This article kind of made me think of the movie Money Ball, where statistics is used to create a winning team, it isn't about the best of the best, it is how you the play the game, against your adversaries...against the outbreak; just as stated above how one confronts unpredictable threats.
