Health Leader Forge Podcast Assignment

For this assignment, I chose to report on Richard Silveria the CFO of Boston Medical Center. Silveria has climbed the ladder to an executive position similarly to the way I hope to achieve in my career. He started his studies at UMass Lowell where he originally wanted to go to medical school but majored in education. After completing his undergrad at UMass Lowell, when it was time to look for a job, he decided to “cold call” Choate Symmes Hospital, which is no longer open. He was given a position at Choate Symmes teaching health relations but this job later lead to working with Information Technology.

After working for Choate Symmes, Silveria moved on to work for Lawrence General Hospital where he worked on the billing cycle even without a finance background. The executive team was willing to take the risk on him and he worked hard to gather data, engage employees, and slowly started to turn around the billing system. This moment in his career was a defining one and he said helped to kick start his career. He left Lawrence General to work at Partners Healthcare, where he worked with revenue cycle and worked on a project to migrate all hospitals in the Partners Network onto one system.

Silveria values his current leadership position at Boston Medical Center. He is currently in charge of four committees and works alongside COO, who develops strategy, and he gets together with rest of organization to perform at level so they can fund strategy.  Without him daily operations would not be able to happen because he develops framework to build balance sheets to maximize cash flow. After listening to Silveria’s career path and hearing about his daily work this is a position I hope to have later in life. His work with Information Systems is something that interests me highly and I hope to do early in my career while still young.

Comments

  1. Nice choice. Silveria is very successful. He's moved on since this interview to a new facility in Chicago.

  2. I like reading about the goals you have in your future career. We have a General Silveria in the Air Force, I wonder if there is any relation. Two successful leaders with the same last name.
